On Saturday, July 5th, 2025, our team from Ibigwi Tours and Travel Agency embarked on a thrilling full-day game drive at Akagera National Park — Rwanda’s only savannah park and home to the Big Five. From the break of dawn to the final sunset, nature gave us a spectacular show of wildlife, breathtaking landscapes, and unforgettable moments.

Early Start, Wild Encounters

Our day started early with a sunrise departure from Kigali. Excitement filled the air as our guests geared up for a day deep in the wild. With our experienced guide leading the way, we entered the southern gate of Akagera and began the journey through this vast ecosystem of savannah plains, wetlands, and rolling hills.

Wildlife Sightings

It didn’t take long before we had our first major sighting — a herd of zebras grazing peacefully under the morning sun. Moments later, we were lucky to come across a large group of elephants, gracefully moving through the brush. Cameras clicked, and gasps of awe echoed in or Bus.

We then spotted:

  • A pride of lions resting under the shade, with intense but calm eyes.
  • Buffaloes wandering close to the water’s edge.
  • A rare sighting of both black and white rhinos — truly majestic and symbolic of Akagera’s conservation success.
  • Waterbucks and impalas darting across the tracks.
  • Hippos submerged lazily in the lakes, with only their eyes peeking out.
  • A crocodile basking on the riverbank, motionless but watchful.

Birdwatcher’s Paradise

For bird lovers, the park offered an extraordinary show. We spotted a wide variety of bird species— from the elegant fish eagle to colorful kingfishers and weaver birds. The park’s rich birdlife added melody and vibrancy to the safari experience.

Lunch With a View

We paused for a packed lunch at Mihindi picnic spots overlooking Lake Mihindi. The cool breeze, shimmering water, and background calls of nature made it a perfect moment to relax and soak it all in.

Sunset Drive & Final Sightings

As the sun began to set, we drove northward, still amazed by the abundance of wildlife. The golden hour painted the park in warm hues, creating magical photo opportunities. The day closed with the peaceful sight of zebras crossing the road ahead of us — a perfect safari farewell.

The July 5th safari to Akagera was nothing short of incredible — a perfect blend of excitement, beauty, and connection to nature. From lions to rhinos and hippos to birds, every moment reminded us why Rwanda’s wilderness is a treasure worth exploring.
